The
dreaded countdown to the start of the new year is upon us all,
the
shops stocked up with deals and treats of new stationary,
The
attraction of brightly coloured notepads and fresh pens!
I
think adults like it all so much more,
But
with going back to school looming get new supplies for the classroom
Can
be daunting thing...
School's
will generally give a list in advance or few weeks into the term
for
bits children will need across the year.
So,
to help you figure out what they might need,
Or
even just suitable supplies for at home for doing homework.
Here
are a few suggestions:
Key
Stage 1:
The
first couple of years, or something even the whole of KS1 you won't
need to get anything!
Though
this does depend on the school, KS1 is full of lots
of group work, discussions and hands-on projects. The basics include:
- pencils
- a ruler
- a rubber
- colouring pencils
- a sharpener
- a glue stick
- scissors
- Pencil case
- Notebook
Opt
for colourful, themed and fun stationery –
or
even give the child the option to choose their own.
This
will help them enjoy using them and look forward to using them for
school work.
Key
Stage 2:
By
this point children will start to do more table-top learning,
Children
will also start to use pens for their writing and may be interested
in basic mathematical equipment towards the end of KS2. Again some
supplies won't be needed at school but maybe helpful for homework.
The list includes all items from the KS1 list as well as:
- Colouring Pens
- Handwriting Pens
- Calculator
- Basic Maths Set (compass & protractor)
- Lined Exercise Book
Key
Stage 3:
KS3
will be the start of writing essays and revising for mock exams.
Pretty much all of their lessons will become table-top learning so
they will need the supplies from the previous two Key Stages as well
as helpful revision items. As well as focusing of organisation of
work.

Key
Stage 4:
Key
Stage 4 is most commonly seen as the exam years, so lots more
coursework and revision will be taking place. With that in mind, your
child should be using everything from the previous lists to ensure
work is well-organised. Though depending on subjects chosen there
maybe need for more specific items, such as the following:
- an atlas for geography lessons
- art supplies for art based lessons (this maybe include chalks, canvases, paints ect)
- Study guides / Test papers
