Getting the kids off their varying technologies and out into the fresh air, can seem like an impossible task! With more focus directed online and 200 channels of TV and radio, sometimes it can seem like our children get home from school then disappear to spend the evening with their best friend, Wifi.
Cutting it all off and heading for a weekend break is the perfect way to reconnect as a family and have some real fun in the real world and one of the best places to do that is Cornwall.
Surrounded by seaside and coastline dotted with pretty towns and villages, Cornwall sits at the far west of Britain. It has inspired adventure stories in books and films because of its history with smuggling and lost treasures. The people in this part of England are particularly friendly and very welcoming to children and young families. Those of you with dogs will find hotel after hotel who will offer a warm welcome to your four legged family member.
There are attractions all over Cornwall and it’s surrounding areas including The Monkey Sanctuary, The Eden Project and of course Land’s End the most Southern part of England’s mainland but you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy this beautiful part of the world and if you are heading down from the North of England then deroute through London and enjoy some Free Family Fun in our capital city on the way.
Exploring the coastland will through up some hidden gems such as Looe Island which is home to one of England’s precious herds of grey seal. Looe is also a busy fishing port so perfect for getting your kids into fresh fish. Taking a seat at the old bridge house you can watch the fisherman busy in the port then enjoy the fresh catch for lunch!
Deep within the countryside of Cornwall you can spend the day hiking with Alpacas or riding horses over the rolling hills. There are mountain bike trials and brilliant coastal walks to get the family active and together. If you get the right time of year a visit to Torquay will give you beautiful sandy beaches to relax for a few hours and, if you are brave enough, take a refreshing dip!
There are plenty of theme parks across cornwall too if you need a little adrenalin rush including the brilliant Adrenalin Quarry where you can take to zip wires and a giant clifftop swing then enjoy a short introduction to Coasteering. The Quarry offers excitement for all ages from the youngest members of your family right up to the more senior members.
Surfing is one of the top reasons for visiting Northern Cornwall with the town of Newquay being great, especially for families with older teenagers as their is a vibrant and exciting nightlife.
So next time you feel disconnected from your kids. Pack up the car and hit the road for a holiday which will see you all recharging yourselves not the various phones and tablets that take over our everyday life!
